It has long been the gold standard in anti-ageing skincare and now retinol is back and better than ever. Kim Larsen explains why Medik8's new r-Retinoate Youth Activating Cream is a real game changer.
What is retinol and why is it used in anti-ageing skincare products?
Retinol is a skincare ingredient that is derived from vitamin A. It is a powerful antioxidant and exfoliates the skin without causing damage, so it's very useful in preventing the ageing process. Retinol increases the production of collagen and elastin by stimulating the fibroblast cells, thus reducing fine lines and wrinkles. Its exfoliating and sebum-regulating properties also make it a must-have ingredient in the treatment of acne. Using retinol leaves the skin fresh and luminous and gives a more youthful appearance.
Does using retinol thin the skin?
Contrary to popular belief, one of the effects of using retinoids is an increase in the thickness of the skin. Even though retinoids do thin the outermost layer of skin, the stratum corneum, they thicken the layers underneath. The end result is plumper, more youthful-looking skin.
What is different about Mediks's r-Retinoate Youth Activating Cream?
The key ingredient in this new serum is retinyl retinoate, or r-Retinoate, which is a hybrid vitamin A compound made from retinol and retinoic acid. This hybrid molecule has been clinically proven to be up to eight times more effective than using retinol alone and, crucially, causes less irritation, so it can be used more frequently. Regular retinol is unstable in UV light, which means it becomes ineffective when exposed to sunlight this is why products containing retinol are only recommended for use at night. Mediks's r-Retinoate molecule is UV stable, so this product can be used both at night to repair collagen and during the day to protect collagen from UV damage.
What results can be expected?
A clinical study showed that r-Retinoate applied twice daily was significantly more effective at reducing the appearance of wrinkles around the eyes than the highstrength retinol it was tested against. It also produced better results than retinol in reducing signs of sundamage on the skin. I would expect people to start seeing results in six to eight weeks of twice daily use.
Can anyone use it?
Yes, unlike regular retinol, this serum can be used on even the most sensitive skin without the fear of irritation.
Best of all, this single product is all you need to address a range of anti-ageing concerns, from fine lines and wrinkles, loss of firmness and elasticity to uneven skin-tone.
